Just removed from my personal collection. This is the earliest pre-Elgin (National Watch Co.) I ever possessed in 45 years. Elgin produced 50 million watches by 1955. This all-original watch is serial No. 8112; the first few months of production in 1865. 18 size, full plate gilt, key wind and key set, wide well diamond jewel settings, G.M. Wheeler/Elgin, Ill. No. 8112. Original 3oz. coin silver hunting key wind hunting case by the Keystone Watch Case Co. Very clear running and very rare American early watch.
Wild Bill Hitchcock, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Railroad men, gunfighters, Saloon keepers, Lawmen, Cowboys carried solid gold ELGIN Watch Co. watches because they were available, accurate, reasonably priced and in circulation all over the Wild West at that time!
