ALBERT H. POTTER & CO., GENEVA 1836- 1908

After a successful career in the United States, Albert Potter moved to Geneva in 1875, where he spent a number of years developing complicated pieces such as minute repeaters. He only produced time only watches. He never produced minute repeaters. He merchandised Swiss minute repeaters with his name on them. He spent his career inventing designs for watch movements, including a quarter repeater and a form of duplex escapement. In Geneva, he had the opportunity to create watches according to his previous designs and plans. An article from the Horological Journal of May 1882 quotes Potter as stating that he had made drawings and working models of fourteen different types of escapements. Potter's incredible craftsmanship made him one of the very few American makers respected by his peers in the Swiss watchmaking industry. His dedication to innovation and precision has rightfully earned him the reputation as one of the finest American watchmakers known today.

The high-grade movement is fitted with three of his patented inventions: the very thick watch plate; a safety mainspring barrel to protect the watch in the event of mainspring breakage; a pivoted detent escapement designed to reduce the angle through which the balance must move in order to unlock the escapement, reducing the risk of 'setting' or stopping in wear.

Albert H. Potter (1836-1908) was one of the greatest watchmakers of the second half of the 19th century and, together with Charles Fasoldt, the most renowned American watchmaker.

Born in upstate New York, he started his career as an apprentice with the watch manufacture Wood & Foley in Albany, NY. In 1855 Potter established his own business in New York City and designed and manufactured watches, apparently not more than around 35 examples, but all of very high quality. In 1875 Potter moved to Geneva where he produced the majority of his fine watches by implementing the ideas and inventions he had developed since the beginning of his career.

Between August and October 1875, he submitted five of his inventions to the US Patent office, including his trademark depicting the also patented compensation balance with auxiliary middle temperature error attachment, a safety barrel, the pivoted detent escapement and a watch plate design. An English patent, No. 2985, was also taken out in 1875 for the same inventions by a patent agent, W. R. Lake, on behalf of Albert Henry Potter of Chicago, Illinois, USA.

J.P. STEVENS & Co. J.P. STEVENS & BRO. J.P. STEVENS WATCH Co. Atlanta, Georgia 1882-1887 In mid-1881 J.P. Stevens bought part of the Springfield Watch co. of Massachusetts; and some unfinished watch components from E.F. Bowman. He set up his watchmaking firm above his jewelry store in Atlanta, Ga. And started to produce the Bowman unfinished watches which were 16 size and various 18 size watches, to which was added the “Stevens Patent Regulator.” This regulator is best described as a simple disc attached to the plate which has an eccentric groove cut for the arm of the regulator to move in. This regulator is a prominent feature of the J.P. Stevens plate with damascening. The pallets were equidistant locking and needed greater accuracy in manufacturing. About 50 of these watches were made. The pallet and fork are made of one-piece aluminum. The aluminum was combined with 1/10 copper and formed an exceedingly tough metal which will not rust or become magnetized. The lever of this watch is only one-third the weight of a steel lever. The aluminum lever affords the lease possible resistance for overcoming inertia in transmitting power from the escape wheel to the balance. In 1884, the company was turning out about ten watches a day at a price of $20 to $100 each. In the spring of 1887, the company failed. Only 169 true Stevens watches were made, but other watches carried the J.P. Stevens name.

Rare Southern States watch Co. J.P. STEVENS & Co. ATLANTA, GA.18k Box Hinge No. 1808. 169 produced, all in Hunting Case. 140 Gams total weight. Springfield, N.Y. movement, not Hampden or Swiss. No. 1808". 53mm diameter, 140 grams total weight. Clean, running and all original to this case. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. ORT. The Order of Railroad Telegraphers (ORT) was a United States labor union established in the late nineteenth century to promote the interests of telegraph operators working for the railroads. A telegraphist, telegrapher, or telegraph operator is an operator who uses a telegraph key to send and receive the Morse code in order to communicate by land lines or radio.

Background and early years.

While early telegraph lines often ran alongside railroad tracks in the United States, it was not until 1851 that the telegraph was first used for train routing by Charles Minot, Superintendent of the Erie Railroad.[1] As the practice gained wider acceptance in the 1860s and 1870s, telegraphers would be stationed in individual depots along the railroad line in order to receive train orders from a centrally located dispatcher and report back on train movements; telegraphed train orders would be written out on paper and "handed up" to the crews of passing trains.

Nationalization of the railroads, 1917-1920[edit] With the entry of the U.S. into the first World War, the railroad and telegraph industries were placed under government control. On December 26, 1917, the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) took control of the railroads.

The ORT in the 1920s The early 1920s were the peak years for ORT membership; by 1922, the union boasted 78,000 members in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Some railroads, including the Santa Fe, the Louisville and Nashville, and the Great Northern, maintained essentially the same agreements with the ORT that they had established during the years of government control.

My speculation: This 18s was created by a ORT Union Member in 1902. One guy (ORT Union member) with this request from Hamilton through his jeweler in 1902. This is the only one known to exist today. Who knows if more than one was created. Everybody thought it was a good idea when viewed and later by 1910 everybody wanted to wear a smaller 16 size, not the old "yesterday's news" 18s. So, when they figured out that it was a good idea to have Hamilton Ball put ORT on their dials by 1910 everyone just wanted a 16 size, when requested from a jeweler by a ORT Union member 1910-1920. Thats why you see only ORT on dials and movements on the 16s.

But it is important to note that Telegraphers represented 2% of Railroad employees. “Trainmen” represented all the rest. The Railroad employees liked what the Telegraphers did with these 18 sizes from Hamilton and Ball. Therefore, the 16 size with “ORT” on the dial and/or movement represented 98% of the Railroad employees or “Trainmen”. “ORT” initials represented “Order of Railroad Trainmen”. Not “Telegraphers”, making this earlier single 18 size “Telegraphers” so incredibly rare.

This is the only ORT Ball known to exist. Hamilton Ball 18 size, Open Face, 21 Jewels, lever set, "Official ORT Standard", "Patt'd June 30, 1896", and "Aug. 18, 1896", serial No. 208,891. AMERICAN WATCH CO. 1859 – 1873 Boston, Mass. Commonly referred to as “The Mother of all American Watch Companies”, this manufacturer was a international pioneer in watch production and accuracy. They were the first to gain independence from European watch providers in the New World. But more than that, they sought to provide a more accurate watch at a affordable price to the American Citizen. After beginning activity in Boston by the Boston Watch Co. 1853 – 1859, In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Co. and the Appleton, Tracy & Co. merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Lincoln was elected president and the country was in Civil War, the American Watch Co. was faced with serious problems. The next year, business came to a standstill. There seemed to be little hope of finding a market for watches, and bankruptcy again seemed close at hand. At this point it was decided to cut expenditures to the lowest possible figure and keep the factory in operation.

American horology owes much to members of the Waltham Watch group such as Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster, and Woerd, who contributed much to its development and success. In early 1861, the name “J. Watson” appeared on model 1857 (first run: nos. 23,601 to 24,300 total production 1200). The next model 1857 was the “R.E. Robbins” of which 2800 were made. The William Ellery marked: Em Ellery, (model 1857) was then introduced with the first serial number of 46,201. It was key wind and key set and has 7 to 15 jewels. A size 10 women’s watch was made in July of 1861 with the first serial numbers of 44,201. It was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co gold balance, ky wind and key set, ¾ plate, 13 to 15 jewels. Some were marked “P.S. Bartlett” and a 15 jewel was marked “Appleton, Tracy & Co.” A special model, 10 size, serial numbers of 45,801 to 46,200, is extremely rare. By 1957, 35,000,000 watches were produced, and the factories closed forever.

NATIONAL WATCH Co. Elgin, Ill. 1864 – 1874

Waltham W.Co. directors Learning from the errors in production and design, formed the National Watch Co. and the goal was to provide a reasonably priced accurate and easily serviced watch (in the field) that would be available for use in the expansion to the Wild West.

The company was 1st formed in 1864 by officers of the earlier Waltham Watch Co. Some of these Waltham organizers were P.S. Bartlett, D.G. Currier, Otis Hoyt, Charles H. Mason and others. The idea of beginning a large watch company for the mid-West was discussed by J.C. Adams, Bartlett, and Blake. After a trip to Waltham, Adams went back to Chicago and approached Benjamin W. Raymond, a former mayor of Chicago, to put up the necessary capital to get the company started. Adams and Raymond succeeded in getting others to pledge their financial support. The National Watch Co. was formed in August 1864 and incorporated in Elgin, Illinois. The factory was completed in 1866, and the 1st movement was a B.W. Raymond, 18 size! All watches were key wind and had porcelain dials marked: “NATIONAL WATCH Co.” Any dial that is marked this way and is mint, is very scarce. They made history creating the foundations of mass production and the ease of service by watch journeyman in the field. They produced 400,000 watches by 1874, allowing circulation of watches available for use in the 1870s. In 1874 they went out of business, refinanced, and incorporated with a Name change to the city to which they owed their origin, Elgin NATIONAL WATCH Co., Elgin, Illinois. They went on to produce 50 million watches, both wrist & pocket by 1955.

Wild Bill Hitchcock, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Railroad men, gunfighters, Saloon keepers, Lawmen, Cowboys all carried National Watch Co. watches because they were available, accurate, reasonably priced and in circulation all over the Wild West at that time! This example is NATIONAL WATCH Co. Elgin, Ill. Chas Fargo 7j, Key Wind/Key Set, serial No. 148,965 and marked: ELGIN., full plate gilt. The full plate gilt plates are in excellent condition, if not mint. The original white porcelain dial is single sunk marked "NATIONAL WATCH CO." with a very fine chapter ring and is absolutely mint and free of any distractions. The case is a beautiful massive 4oz. coin silver Hunting Model case featuring a single blank SHIELD surrounded by flower designs. All surfaces are free of dents or any distraction that might distract. Just removed from my personal collection, clean running and a historic early American watch. INDEPENDENT WATCH CO. Fredonia, New York Circa: 1875-1881 The California Watch Company was idle for two years before it was purchased by brothers E. W. Howard and C.M. Howard. They had been selling watches by mail for some time and started engraving the Howard Bros. name on them and using American-made watches. Their chief supply came from Hampden Watch Co. Illinois w. CO U.S. WATCH Co. of Marion. The brothers formed the Independent Watch Co. in 1880, but it was not a watch factory in the true sense. They had other manufacturers engrave the Independent Watch col name on the top plates and on the dials of their watches. Sold mostly by mail order. The company later decided to manufacture watches and used the name Fredonia Watch Co., but they found that selling watches two different ways was not particularly good. The business survived until 1881 at which time the ow3ners decided to move the plant to a new location at Peoria, Illinois. Approximately 180,000 watches were made that sold for $16.00

This example is a J.P. Stevens AURORA NEW MODEL, 18 size, hunting model, Full Plate Nickel plates, lever set, marked: J.P. Stevens & Bro. ATLANTA, GA., serial No. 141,717, 15 jewels. The nickel plates are in excellent condition, free of distractions. The case is a very fancy yellow gold filled hunting case free of initials and closes tight. Very nice. This watch is running, but when placed upside down, it stops. Therefore, we are offering this rare watch on a "as is" basis.

NATIONAL WATCH Co. Elgin, Ill. 1864 – 1874 One of the most predominant early American Watch producers. This watch was introduced for sale in 1870 and is an excellent example of what was available in the 1870s. This is the watch of the “Wild West”, because this manufacturer distributed watches all during the 1870s and carried by lawmen, saloon keepers, bankers, cowboys, Railroad men, and gunfighters. NATIONAL WATCH CO. was directly associated with the “Wild West” because that is what was available (400,000 produced and distributed by 1874), accurate and at a reasonable price.

Learning from the errors in production and mistakes in design, National Watch Co. was formed in 1864 by officers of the earlier Waltham Watch Co. Some of these Waltham organizers were P.S. Bartlett, D.G. Currier, Otis Hoyt, Charles H. Mason and others. The idea of beginning a large watch company for the mid-West was discussed by J.C. Adams, Bartlett, and Blake. They went on to produce 50 million watches, both wrist & pocket by 1955. NATIONAL WATCH CO. was directly associated with the “Wild West” because that is what was available for them to wear and use. Other choices were more expensive and not as serviceable and dependable in the American West.

The example presented here is Museum quality OEM with an absence of any wear or use. NATIONAL WATCH Co. Circa: 1870! 18 size, open face, key wind and key set, full plate gilt, 15 jewels, "W.H. Ferry", and "ELGIN, Ill", serial No. 93884. The white porcelain dial is marked: NATIONAL WATCH Co. The original coin silver hunting case is a double hinged back and bezel, key wind plain polished with fancy engraving on both sides. The dial, case, and movement are all original to one another and shows no wear or use at all. Remarkable! The chain is sterling silver and includes a T-Bar and proper winding key both to wind and set the time from the center post. Clean, running. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. A complete and full line of watches was made, and most were cased and styled to be sold as a compete watch. The watches were generally 16 size with full plat4 movements. The patented winding mechanism was different. These watches were both in hunter and open-face cases and later had a sweep second hand. Total production was 160,000 or more watches. A two button chronograph just sold at auction for over $900.

This is a Rare example with a THREE STAR RARITY in all price guides; Manhattan Watch Co. 2 Button STOP WATCH with a fancy mint yellow gold filled screw back and bezel original case. Rare. **BOSTON WATCH Co. BOSTON, Mass. Original Double Hinged Display Case, marked on both bezels "DUEBER HAMPDEN". Mint white porcelain dial; signed just as the movement: "BOSTON WATCH Co.". 18 size, Hinting Model, full plate gilt, 15 jewels, lever set, Serial No. 159.713. Very clean, running, and in wonderful original condition.

"Boston Watch Company" Watches made by Hampden If you run across a watch marked "Boston Watch Company" on the movement and/or dial, it is VERY likely that it is NOT an original Boston Watch Company watch. The total watch production for Boston Watch Company was around 5000 watches, so if you have a Boston Watch Company watch with a serial number above 5000, then it's not an original Boston Watch Company watch, but nevertheless, very scarce.

The Dueber-Hampden Watch Company produced an 18-size model which was labeled "Boston Watch Company". It is not known how or when (or if) Hampden acquired the rights to the "Boston Watch Company" name, but these Hampden-produced "Boston Watch Company" watches are far more plentiful than original watches produced by the Boston Watch Company, which are quite rare and collectible. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET, BITCOIN, BONDS. BUY HARD ASSETS, SOMETHING PROVEN IN TIME.

NEW YORK WATCH Co. Providence, Rhode Island 1866-1875

In 1866 the name of this company was changed from the Mozart Watch Co. to the New York Watch Co. and was in Rhode Island. Before any watches were sold, they moved to Springfield, Mass. In 1867. A factory was built there, but only about 100 watches were produced before a fire occurred on April 23, 1870. Shortly after the fire, in 1870, a newly designed watch was introduced. The New York Watch Co. used full signatures on its movements. The doors closed in the summer of 1876. In January 1877, the Hampden Watch Co. was organized and commenced active operation in June 1877.

This example is a 18 size H.G. HOMER FOOT, Springfield, Mass. 15 jewels, 3/4 Plate Gilt, Key Wind and Key Set From the rear, marked: Homer Foot, Springfield, mass, 18 size, Serial No. 4596. The dial is a rare Double Sunk White Porcelain Roman marked: NEW YORK WATCH Co. This is a very Rare double sunk dial. Faint hairlines at edge of 12 and 5 with a couple of tiny chip repairs, all, of which do not distract. The case is a 3.5 oz. coin silver hunting case which is key wind and key set from the dust cover or rear. This case is a very early American Watch Co. key wind case. The movement is very clean and running. Keeps very good time.

ROCKFORD WATCH CO. Rockford, Illinois 1873 – 1915 The Rockford Watch Company’s equipment was bought from the Cornell Watch Col, and two of Cornell’s employees, C.W. Parker and P.H. Wheeler, went to work for Rockford. The factory was located 93 miles from Chicago on the Rock River. The first watch was placed on the market on May 1, 1876. They were key wind, 18 size, full plate expansion balance and dials made by outside contract. By 1877 the company was making ¾ plate and nickel movements that fit standard steel cases. The factory was located on the Railroad lines and they always advertised the Railroad. The company had some problems in 1896, and the name changed to Rockford Watch Co Ltd. It closed in 1915.

This Rockford Key Wind is presented with a very rare original private label dial marked: "HARNER.SILVEN." 18 Size, Open Face, Key Wind & Dey Set, Full Plate Gilt, 11j, Serial No. 52,886. The first 12 months of production of the key wind watch. This is interesting because Rockford produced this watch in 1877 at a time when private labels were always offered. 1n the 1870s, HARNER Razors & Blades began merchandising Blades and Razors to the public and latter became famous. We think this private label has it's origin from the early days of this company as a marketing support adding prestige to their name in 1878.

Approximately 180,000 watches were made that sold for $16.00.

This example is a 18 size, full plate gilt, key wind and key set, 15 Jewels, marked: "Independent Watch Co. Fredonia, N.Y. No. 206,198". S.B. Champlin Company Providence, RI 1872 - 1934

The men's watch chain or "Vest Chain" is typically much scarcer than the pocket watch itself. This is because by 1915, the watch was retired to storage and the chain “discarded”, thrown away, or women converted them to bracelets. This fine men’s vest chain presented was produced by the Champlin Co. in 1896, inventoried, and was never sold to the trade or Jeweler for sale. It is therefore, in pristine, new but old stock condition! Can’t get any rarer or desirable! br>
A sharply angled, almost-triangular-plan 5-story brick industrial building, this was constructed by the S.B. Champlin Company (established 1872) to house its manufacturing of gold rings and gold-filled chains as well as provide rental space for other jewelry manufacturers, an own-and-rent practice then common in the jewelry industry and characteristic of neighboring contemporary buildings in the Jewelry District. The building was so successful that it was enlarged to the south in 1901; only a faintly visible seam marks the union of the two sections. In 1978, the building was converted to condominium use, the first of its type in the area, and retains mixed residential and commercial use.

Gold filled vest chains were originally produced with high gold content. True Gold-Filled vest chains are considered a solid karat gold with today's value per gram @ $3.22. This design has total weight of 15 grams. V. Rare. Vintage 18k Gold Filled Double pocket MULTI-COLORED Rose and White Gold Vest Chain with a Rope design marked S.B.C. & Co. (S.B. Champlin Co.) & T-Bar 1896 Providence, RI. NOS. Never used, sold or applied to a watch. Still has the original Sales Manufacturers tag. Vintage 18k Gold Filled Vest Chain & T-Bar 1896 S.B. Champlin Co. NOS (New, But OLD STOCK). Prestine original condition. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET OR BONDS. BUY HISTORIC AND COLLECTIBLE HARD ASSETS.

This Slider design has total weight of 14 grams.

Chose from a selection of Vest Chain & T-Bar Champlin Co. 1896 S.B. Champlin Co., Providence, RI. NOS. All chains ever used, sold or applied to a watch. Each still has the original Sales Manufacturers tag. Vintage 18k Gold Filled Vest Chain & T-Bar 1896 (New, But OLD STOCK). All pristine original condition. "This chain is guaranteed to give entire satisfaction to the wearer": quote: S.B. Champlin Co. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET OR BONDS.
