This 3/4 plate two-tone, gilt trimmed 23j is one of the only examples known to the Hampden collector. Hampden Railroad Models were famous for their beautiful two-tone movement models. The better-preserved bold colors, the higher the value. This example is a Rare 3/4 Plate. ROCKFORD 21j Grade 535 3/4 Plate Nickel, 16 size, Hunting Model, original nickel Display case with original beveled glass on both sides. Buttler surface pattern on the movement, "RG" (Railroad Grade), "21 Jewels", lever set, "Adjusted", serial No. 551,431. The double sunk white porcelain dial is original Roman figures w/hairline at 3. The case is a nickel snap back on both sides with the original beveled glass on both sides for easy viewing of the watch and movement. The case is original to this movement and is from the same era. This rare "Glass Back" case was used by the Rockford Factory salesman to present the Railroad Grade line of movements for sale to U.S. Jewelers. Very scarce. Clean, running and still accurate. INDEPENDENT WATCH CO. Fredonia, New York Circa: 1875-1881 The California Watch Company was idle for two years before it was purchased by brothers E. W. Howard and C.M. Howard. They had been selling watches by mail for some time and started engraving the Howard Bros. name on them and using American-made watches. Their chief supply came from Hampden Watch Co. Illinois w. CO U.S. WATCH Co. of Marion. The brothers formed the Independent Watch Co. in 1880, but it was not a watch factory in the true sense. They had other manufacturers engrave the Independent Watch col name on the top plates and on the dials of their watches. Sold mostly by mail order. The company later decided to manufacture watches and used the name Fredonia Watch Co., but they found that selling watches two different ways was not particularly good. The business survived until 1881 at which time the ow3ners decided to move the plant to a new location at Peoria, Illinois. Approximately 180,000 watches were made that sold for $16.00.

This example is a 18 size, full plate gilt, key wind and key set, 15 Jewels, marked: "Independent Watch Co. Fredonia, N.Y. No. 206,198". White porcelain original dial marked "Independent Watch Co./FREDONIA/N.Y." with a single hairline. Original double hinged back and bezel unmarked 3oz nickel silver open face key wind case. Manhattan Watch Co. New York, N.Y. 1883 – 1893 The Manhattan Watch Co. made mainly low cost production watches. A complete and full line of watches was made, and most were cased and styled to be sold as a compete watch. The watches were generally 16 size with full plat4 movements. The patented winding mechanism was different. These watches were both in hunter and open-face cases and later had a sweep second hand. Total production was 160,000 or more watches. A two button chronograph just sold at auction for over $900.

ROCKFORD WATCH CO. Rockford, Illinois 1873 – 1915 The Rockford Watch Company’s equipment was bought from the Cornell Watch Col, and two of Cornell’s employees, C.W. Parker and P.H. Wheeler, went to work for Rockford. The factory was located 93 miles from Chicago on the Rock Rover. The first watch was placed on the market on May1, 1878. They were key wind, 18 size, full plate expansion balance and dials made by outside contract. By 1877 the company was making ¾ plate and nickel movements that fit standard steel cases. The factory was located on the Railroad lines, and they always advertised the Railroad. The company had some problems in 1896, and the name changed to Rockford Watch Co Ltd. It closed in 1915 with pocket watch production serial numbers reaching over one million.

This example is a very low serial No. 25,579. The first year of production of the Model 1 Key Wind in 1877. 15 jewels, full plate gilt, key wind and key set, signed Rockford Watch Co., Rockford, Illinois. This watch is running and keeping time. The case is a 3oz. coin silver open face key wind case built by NEWPORT COIN. Very nice. The white porcelain dial has one very fine hairline, which does not distract. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. The men's watch chain or "Vest Chain" is typically much scarcer than the pocket watch itself. This is because by 1915, the watch was retired to storage and the chain “discarded”, thrown away, or women converted them to bracelets. This fine men’s vest chain presented was produced by the Champlin Co. in 1896, inventoried, and was never sold to the trade or Jeweler for sale. It is therefore, in pristine, new but old stock condition! Can’t get any rarer or desirable! br>
A sharply angled, almost-triangular-plan 5-story brick industrial building, this was constructed by the S.B. Champlin Company (established 1872) to house its manufacturing of gold rings and gold-filled chains as well as provide rental space for other jewelry manufacturers, an own-and-rent practice then common in the jewelry industry and characteristic of neighboring contemporary buildings in the Jewelry District. The building was so successful that it was enlarged to the south in 1901; only a faintly visible seam marks the union of the two sections. In 1978, the building was converted to condominium use, the first of its type in the area, and retains mixed residential and commercial use.

In the late 1800's when the United States Marshals were under the Justice Department, some badges were ordered by the Justice Department. As far as it can be determined, these badges were circle and cut out stars. "UNITED STATES MARSHAL" They were hallmarked U. S. MARSHAL, stamped. These badges were sent to the Territories and Districts when the Justice Department received a request from a particular U.S. Marshal in writing or by telegraph.

The US Marshals Service is an agency that is part of the Justice Department. They are responsible for the protection of court officials, judicial buildings and the effective functioning of the US judicial system. The service also helps with the transport of prisoners, serves arrest warrants and seeks fugitives.

The US Marshal is the oldest federal agency and its origin dates back to a law issued by George Washington on September 24, 1789 (Judiciary Act), which included the creation of other judicial officials. Two years later, the first 16 agents were chosen for each one of the judicial districts of the young nation. Over the years the agents have been in charge of running the federal courts properly: from ensuring the presence of witnesses, to executing orders for death sentences.

The US Marshal has been involved in most of the major historical episodes in the US history. Before the American Civil War (1861-1865) they had the function of catching the fugitive slaves and returning them with their owners. During this conflict, they confiscated the properties used as support for the cause of the Confederate States of America. And in the following years they played an important role in the expansion of the American West.

Among the representative names of the time is Wyatt Earp (March 19, 1848 - January 13, 1929), a marshal very famous in the American West for his extreme harshness in dealing with those who broke the law, incorruptible and daring in their procedures. His fame was achieved in Tombstone (Arizona), where he was one of the protagonists of the shooting in the O.K. Corral, along with Doc Holliday, Virgil Earp, and Morgan Earp. He is part of the legendary figures of the American West having inspired numerous westerns.
